THE BENEFITS OF OUR    SENSORY SUITE

WHAT IS OUR SENSORY SUITE AT SCHOLARS EDUCATION CENTRE ALL ABOUT?

Our Sensory Suite is a specially designed room which combines a range of stimuli to help individuals develop and engage their senses. We have beautifully painted dark blue walls with a waterfall light, bubble tubes, mega pod,  over stuffed bean bags, weighted blankets, floor piano, bubble wall, sounds, sensory soft play objects, aromas ...all within a safe environment that allows our students and clients using our Sensory Suite  to explore and interact without risk.

Our Sensory Suite can  help those who have learning difficulties, developmental disabilities, sensory impairments or our typical students who simply feel the need for a calm and quiet environment. When our students enter, they immediately feel the effects of the calm atmosphere and can feel where they are in relation to the rest of the world. Our Sensory Suite helps them learn to interact with the world around them, but in a safe environment that builds up their confidence and their ability. The users experience an unrestrained non-threatening space where they can explore at their own leisure. This freedom allows their teacher, therapist or carer to see what calms them, what excites them and observe how they respond to a variety of stimuli.

BENEFITS :

There is a whole armada of benefits of a sensory space for those who require them:

  • Sensory Stimulation – by encouraging the client to engage and explore the environment it can have positive effects on their ability to react in a more sheltered environment. Then later on...interact with the larger world around them...many students attend during the day before heading to their regular programmed day or before their academic sessions with one of our Tutors

  • Enhance Learning through Play – following on from this, sensory stimulation can engage different areas of the brain...at Scholars we are all about how the brain takes on information and help children absorb and retain more information by meeting the needs of the individual...we have a number of memory activities to enhance both visual and auditory memory

  • Improve Balance, Movement and Spatial Orientation - Our sensory suite is also equipped with balance boards which can help develop students’ visual processing abilities as well as their fine and gross motor skills, which will help facilitate day-to-day living. We are designated a Certified IPP (Integrated Practice Protocol) Centre for assisting students with sensory integration.

  • Address Problems With Behaviour - Our Sensory Suite environment is wonderfully cosy, providing comfort and calm for overactive, anxious or distressed individuals. Also helping inactive individuals to feel better engaged and encourage participation in small group activities. Within a calm atmosphere, our more challenging students focus on activities and programs to help explore their feelings of anger and help them from getting the urge to ‘act up or act out’.

  • In addition to helping the children sleep, stay calm, reduce stress or to become more focused...we use a variety of essential oils in a diffuser. It also helps purify  the room and eliminate bacteria or viruses in the air. Overall it helps us create a better learning environment for our entire staff and student body.

These are just a small sampling of the benefits of our Sensory Suite. At Scholars Education Centre, we pride ourselves on having the experience and knowledge to know what will work for each student, the abilities they have and the skills they are needing to help them develop. If you are able... drop by for a tour!
